Vitamin D - The sunshine vitamin with a 5,000 IU weekly supply!
Vitamin D, along with vitamins A, E, and K, is one of the fat-soluble vitamins. Strictly speaking, however, it is a prohormone, a precursor that is converted into a hormone in the body. It is often called the "sunshine vitamin" because the human body can only produce vitamin D, which can only be obtained through a few specific foods, in its most effective form, vitamin D3, under the influence of UVB radiation from sunlight. This brings us to the crux of the problem, which is why almost every Central European has a vitamin D deficiency or at least suboptimal vitamin D levels. The UV radiation at our latitudes is too weak to produce sufficient vitamin D3, and moreover, everyday life, with its office jobs and similar activities, means that we spend too little time in the sun anyway.
The need for vitamin D3 supplementation is highest in winter, but it is also recommended for most people in summer.
An all-rounder for health
Vitamin D has a wide range of functions. Among other things, it is necessary for calcium absorption in the intestines and is therefore involved in the continuous process of bone and tooth resorption. It can increase bone mineral density and thus protect against bone loss and fractures. Conversely, a vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of fractures. Additionally, vitamin D can improve various immune functions and may therefore alleviate a wide range of immune problems, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and infections. Vitamin D appears to improve cognitive function, support muscle and nerve function, positively influence testosterone levels, and reduce the risk of various diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
The remedy for winter depression
A vitamin D deficiency can negatively impact overall mood. Since UV radiation is lower in winter, so-called winter depression often occurs, primarily due to insufficient conversion of vitamin D to vitamin D3. Supplementation can help alleviate this and improve mood in general.
The interaction of vitamin D and vitamin K
Vitamin K, also one of the fat-soluble vitamins, offers further health benefits related to bones and cardiovascular health, making it the perfect complement to vitamin D. While vitamin D can increase calcium absorption in the intestines, vitamin K can regulate calcium transport. Vitamin K can also prevent calcium from being deposited in places where it would be harmful to health. For example, it prevents the calcification of arteries. This function is important because it also helps prevent the risk of calcium deposits in the blood through vitamin D3 supplementation.
