Pterostilbe - one of the strongest blood sugar regulators
Pterostilbene is a compound closely related to resveratrol, but it contains two additional methyl groups. Pterostilbene is believed to have a wide range of benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing cognition and mental function.
Where does pterostilbene occur naturally?
The compound occurs naturally in grapes, blueberries and vijayasar, but unlike resveratrol, it is not found in red wine, as it may not be stable enough to survive the winemaking process unscathed.
Some of the benefits of pterostilbene are related to general health. A study with subjects suffering from diabetes mellitus showed that a twelve-week supplementation with pterostilbene significantly lowered blood sugar levels. Similar effects were also observed in animals. Thus, pterostilbene may have similar effects to the widely used diabetes medication metformin, which increases insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake by body tissues.
In the context of bodybuilding and sports nutrition, pterostilbene can be used as an insulin action enhancer, helping to transport nutrients such as carbohydrates, amino acids, and even creatine into cells. This process can help supply the body with everything it urgently needs during times of rapid nutrient demand, such as during intense training. This can lead to increased performance and improved recovery.
Benefits and support in cognitive brain health
There is also a study on rats that investigated the effects of pterostilbene on cognitive function. When older rats were fed pterostilbene, an improvement in learning ability and memory performance was observed. This could particularly support an improvement in the mind-muscle connection in older exercisers.
What should be considered when taking pterostilbene?
Pterostilbene has a fairly good safety profile when taken at the recommended dosage. However, users with diabetes or other serious health problems should consult their doctor before using pterostilbene.
Dosage and combination with other supplements possible?
The dosage of pterostilbene depends on the user's body weight and goals. Dosages ranging from 50 to 125 mg twice daily have been used in studies. It is beneficial to take pterostilbene before or during training with other nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, and/or creatine.
